News: Grand Tour to Burgundy

Trustee Dr Anthony Freeman organised a trip to see Romanesque churches in Burgundy. Between 21 and 25 September 27 travellers from all parts of UK went by coach to Cluny and back. The itinerary included visits to Cluniac churches at Autun, Vézelay & Tournus and the chapel at Berzé-la-ville. The European Federation of Cluniac Sites gave a great welcome at Cluny and showed the party round rhe town and the abbey. The trip also took in a visit to Alesia where in 52 BC Julius Caesar besieged the Gauls under Vercingetorix.

Vézelay Abbey church (pictured right) is said to be the same size as the great church of Lewes Priory.
