Calling everyone, young and and old, gardeners, history lovers and all keen volunteers. Help us create a medieval kitchen garden in Lewes Priory Park to complement our existing herb garden.

After a long year of planning and submitting funding applications we are absolutely delighted to have been awarded funding from Tesco’s Bags of Help, Sussex Community Fund and Lewes Town Council. We have also been chosen as one of the Mayor of Lewes’s charities this year. Thanks must go to St Mary’s Gardening Club, Southover Primary School, Lewes & District Garden Society and Lewes Castle Rotary Club who kindly supported our applications.

So what does the project involve?

  • The hard work will begin in October, when we will construct six raised beds at the southern end of the site, next to the folly tower. We need volunteers to help with this. Dates to be announced shortly but will most likely be the second weekend in October. After the  beds have been made, turf will be laid over the ground and overwintered.
  • In the spring of 2017 gardening will begin in earnest, first with the construction of a living wattle fence around the garden, followed by planting of the beds. We need help deciding what to plant, as well as with planting, so anyone  with a trowel, an interest in medieval gardens or food would be warmly welcomed.
  • The garden will be run as a community venture by volunteers, who can help as often or a little as they like. You don’t have to be super fit or a horticultural expert. Please come and join us. At the moment we think we will have a gardening session once a week, where volunteers meet, work together, chat, share ideas and harvest the fruits of their labour. Tell us what would suit you.
  • There will be an ongoing programme of workshops, events and the creation educational resources for community groups, colleges and schools. Do tell us what you would like so we can create a programme to suit you
